Color Series: The In Betweens Day 5

This is a great example of when white isn’t actually white. When I did the white series, I ended up having to just go with a few that I really didn’t want to include because they didn’t hit a true enough white for me, but I realized after I started the series that way too many that I thought would work still bothered me because they had just a tint of color.

On this iris, the left petals tint towards a very pale purple and right ones have tones of yellow and green. Both are pretty faint, but noticeable. It’s funny because when you are standing back and looking at this flower, it is absolutely white. It isn’t until you get closer, say when trying to do a macro photo, that you really start to see the colors.

When I started this series, I knew I’d have a few colors I struggled with, but I really wasn’t expecting white to be one of them.

Color Series: White Day 7

This white series had really kind of felt like I was cheating. White is one of those colors that my brain doesn’t like to assign to most things. Many of the photos I posted really registered as “very pale purple” or “cream” or any number of tints or shades in the white range, but still holds some color. Which frustrated me.

To me, white almost isn’t a color. It is the absence of color, but it tends to reflect colors that are around it so there is always some color visible. Or, as I said above, it is really just an extremely pale version of a color. Either way, my brain doesn’t really like to put most things in a white category. Especially not things in nature as those will almost always pull other colors in.

While I shared some really pretty photos, very few of them actually ping white to me, so this series was hard on my poor artist’s brain.

I’ll be starting another series soon usings LA’s suggestion of doing cool and warm colors to cover some of those in betweens my brain refuses to put in a standard color range. I probably won’t start that for another week. I need to get past recital before my brain can function again. That’s assuming it ever really functions well to begin with.

I’m off to spend a chunk of Mother’s Day sitting my mobile dressing room (aka, my car with sheets hung up over windows) so BG can do costume changes for pictures. An interesting experience brought on by covid restrictions. It also means I get to do some creative photography on my own with her in front of her studio, so it’s all fun, if a little chaotic.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Color Series: White Day 1

White will be the last of the regular color series. I will start a slightly different phase after this.

For anyone that wants to play along, my only suggestions (suggestions, not rules!) are:

The color is the dominate focus in the image as opposed to a small spot in a lot of other colors.

Drop a comment so I can follow along on your color journey.

That’s it! I hope you play along and have some fun!
