I’d had my barberry bushes for almost 15 years before I realized that they put on these tiny flowers in the spring. They tend to sit a little under the leaves, so it was easy to overlook the fact that the odd coloring you see in the spring wasn’t just the bush leafing out before gaining color.

I am a slightly sane artist, amateur photographer, book addict, wife, mom and raging introvert. I have more hobbies than I can count, so it is beyond shocking that I manage to find time to do any of them, let alone most of them and still have time to do anything else. Of all the talents I claim, writing wasn’t one of them until my muse dropped the idea for a book on my head.

I have these and unless you are looking for them they are easy to miss. Even the Japanese type that are maroon in color have tiny little blossoms.

These will turn that deeper red/burgundy after the flowers are done. I just never really got up close enough to see the flowers until last year (maybe the year before?). It was one of those fun little surprises you weren’t expecting.
