The very first night we got into Door County, we took enough time to get checked in to where we were staying and drop off our bags before we headed right back out even though we’d been in the car for well over 11 hours. We wanted to scout out a few areas before the next day and we needed to hunt down some place to eat.
The first place I wanted to check out was a place to get a good view of the sunset that I’d found on Google maps. It looked to be the ideal spot.
I especially loved the small pool of water with only a small strip of shore between it and the lake. When we checked the spot out, only 1 person was there with their dog. Little did we know that everyone else on the peninsula also thought it was the ideal sunset viewing spot. When we came back after doing a bit more scouting, it was packed with people. Since it wasn’t an official park, there wasn’t any parking and the road just dead ended at the shore, so everyone was parked along this narrow twisty piece with a really steep incline.
There were very few spots to stand to get pictures as the shore was lined with people in chairs and sitting on the rocks. I was really thankful that the area right in front of the little pool was open. I did have to avoid a couple of heads and dogs trying to photobomb me, but I managed to get several awesome shots.
We only stayed until the sun dropped below the cloud line before we left. We were exhausted from the drive and wanted a chance to just go chill out for a while without being surrounded by people and gnats. The clouds gave us a stunning sunset, but made it impossible for us to get a good night for star viewing so we didn’t even attempt it that first night.

Love these photos. I’ve never gotten to stay in Door Co. even though we used to live in central Illinois. I’ve ridden my motorcycle through parts of Michigan, even spent a night in Copper Harbor where it was so peaceful that my heart didn’t want to leave.

We lucked out and ended up there in the middle of cherry season. It was amazing to drive along and see fields of cherry trees covered in bright red (no, I blew it and didn’t get any photos). I had some of the best Rainier cherries I’ve ever eaten while we were there. I’d want to live there just for that. Can you imagine how gorgeous it would be when all those trees were in bloom?!

Well done! If you like to do a lot of sunsets, check out the website sunsetwx.com They use weather and particulate reports to predict sunset and sunrise quality. It’s pretty handy. I use it a lot.

I don’t that often and is one of the reasons why I really wanted to try and get some on this trip. If I could find a location close with a really great view, I’d probably do more, but my focus is mostly macro photography. I honestly think I probably need a different lens for better landscapes. I will check out that site, though. I have one place I really want to try and get a good sunrise shot from, but it requires dragging my lazy butt out of bed in time, first.

I’m such a night owl. It isn’t often you see me heading for bed before 11 or 12 or later depending on where I’m at in a book, so really early mornings so are not my thing. It about killed me to get up as early as I did when we left to go on this trip.

I’m the same way. Getting up early is awful. I can do it, but I have to lure myself out with some kind of treat for the road to wherever I’m going.
