A couple of weeks ago I had ordered a new rain gauge online. The day it was supposed to show up, I get an email saying I needed to authorize a change and that I’d be lucky if I saw the thing by the end of September. I had thought when I saw it and the ones like it that there was zero reason why I couldn’t make my own other than needing the right materials, so I just decided to cancel the order and figure out a way to make my own.
This was my first project in my new craft space and was a great test for using it. I think my only complaint is the fixed chair instead of a wheeled chair, but after talking to Hubby, I think I even have a decent option for changing that without having to spend any more money.
I had most of the materials to make this. The butterfly came from a yard stake I had years ago that the metal that held the butterfly in place rusted out. I couldn’t toss the butterfly because it was too pretty, but I was never able to figure out what I wanted to do with it. I also had all the copper wire, the beads (amethyst and blue lace agate), the marbles and the pole (came from an old hanging bug lantern). The only part I had to buy was the actual rain gauge.
Working on this project made it clear to me that it has been way too long since I even touched wire because it isn’t nearly as clean as I would have liked if I were making this to sell, but I am pleased since I didn’t have any real specific plan or direction of how I wanted this to look when I was finished and just went the wing it route, making it up as I went along.
It felt really good to get back into the studio to do something creative that wasn’t behind my camera for a change. It has made my fingers itchy to do even more. I have a jewelry project on my to do list and I have some clay that is on its way, so hopefully those creative juices keep flowing.
And hopefully I don’t melt in the mean time as that AC problem? Yeah, it went out again, so I’m still dripping. Thankfully my new guy is still willing to bend over backwards and will be dropping by a window unit to help us get through until they get here on Wednesday to install the new one. Seriously love this guy’s work ethic and commitment to his customers.

It can be awesome, but it can also be crazy. Sometimes there is so much I want to work on and I can’t decided what to do so I don’t do anything at all. That and it can get crazy expensive. That is one of the reasons why this one was a semi-repurposed project.

I’ve had a couple of different spaces over the years. I loved convenience and access of the first (could work on something and cook dinner at the same time) but I didn’t like that the mess was kind of in your face as soon as you walked into the house. Then, when it was in my office, it was so tight and crowded, it was nearly impossible to move in so I rarely did anything. Now that it is in the basement, I have all the space I could ever need. The lighting isn’t great, but that is what lamps and things are for, plus I need the dimmer lighting for silver work, so that is actually a good thing. It IS humid down there, but I’ve got my fingers crossed that the new HVAC system takes care of most of that issue. No matter what, it is still one of the best set ups I’ve had for it.
