Renovations

Yesterday was the start of a huge, deep cleaning and tossing out project. FINALLY after way too long, Hubby and I went through the basement and created our piles of trash vs. donate vs. keep. We are now ready for someone to come and get years of stuff we haven’t known what to do with or how to get rid of it.

Besides this being a long overdue project, it was absolutely necessary to try and clear out the areas in front of the windows because I am also finally getting my new windows in next week and is the impetus for the entire need for deep cleaning. It isn’t just the windows in the basement I have to clear space in front of. It is a total of 27 windows in all getting replaced.

Many of those windows are actually pretty easy to access by just pulling some furniture a little bit away and they are good. Some aren’t quite so simple. Like the desk in MC’s room. A massive L shaped thing in a room that has no room for that beast to move. BG’s desk is a little smaller, but again, NO ROOM to move it out of the way and still allow someone to actually get in or out of the room without crawling over furniture to get to those windows in the first place.

So, that is my project for the next several days. The basement is finally done, which was a horribly massive project. It was also a bit of an emotional upheaval as I have several things I just do not know what to do with because of ties to either OC or the family that I’ve cut all ties to. I’ve opted to keep those things for now. I have until later this month before hauling off happens if I change my mind.

Besides clearing space in front of windows, I also have to take down all the window treatments and either clean them to get them ready to go back up or toss them and decide what I want in their place. I haven’t changed anything really since we moved in 14 years ago. With all the new houses behind us, I think I’ll be adding a lot of blinds to the windows on that side of the house.

So more cleaning. More organizing and shuffling furniture. And the potential to have to go shopping for new blinds. I have until Wednesday to get it all done, so there isn’t too much pressure and the worst is already done and damn! Did it feel good to get that mess in the basement at least organized and ready for the next step. I cannot wait until the windows are in. It will be one immensely stressful house maintenance thing off my mind.

  1. It is amazing what you can do when under pressure, the things you have been putting off because they seem insurmountable are now doable. During our heat wave I cleaned up the gardening part of the basement which I had been putting off for years, just kept dumping stuff there. It was so hot that I couldn’t do anything else and I found things I had forgotten I had and a ton of trash to throw out. Enjoy your new windows you worked hard for them.

    1. Thanks! The bigger impact of what we did won’t happen until later in the month when the junk and larger donate pieces get picked up, but it still feels amazing. I can’t wait to see the finished product.
