Giant Nutcracker Project - Head Piece Paint Issues

Today started out not so great but ended up way better than I’d hoped after the way it started.

The head portion of the nutcrackers was a horrid mess after trying to add the metallic to the lower portion. The flesh colored paint pulled away when I removed the tape and left bare spots. The wrinkly mess that was the metallic peeled off in weird random sections and didn’t want to come off in others.

I decided I needed to redo the painting the upper body sections since they were off center. I couldn’t justify making do on a project this huge. The side color (red) in the areas I touched up were shiny and stood out from the rest that had a sort of matte finish because of the glitter layer. When I went to repaint the center section (dark blue), the paint started doing some weird stuff, running and bleeding to the lower paint color. It was just plain ugly. I was hugely frustrated.

I still needed a few things so I took a break to go pick those up and found a good solution to the body paint issues. I figured I’d just add regular red glitter to the areas that didn’t have the spray since the glitter spray paint did weird things to my paint. I found not only the red I needed, but a blue that was perfect to hide any of the ugly that was showing on the repaint of the center section.

After I got back, I worked on fixing the body sections and adding the glitter over a spray adhesive. While waiting for that to dry, I worked on fixing the silver on the head section. Sadly, my tape that I decided to use isn’t like a regular duct tape and it didn’t stick well. I MAY have a solution for that, but I had to set that aside for the day. Other than the lifting, it looks awesome. I also just bit the bullet and pulled out my acrylics and painted the flesh tone of the head as well instead of trying to spray it again. It looks light years better than it did this morning. I also worked on the boot portion of the legs, which was just layering black duct tape (LOVE what the real duct tape is doing for this project).

I think I am actually, finally, finished with all the spray paint and little fussy things I needed to do before I could start to assemble these. The new glitter treatment looks amazing. The legs are looking exactly like I’d hoped they would. So, barring any other unforeseen complications, I will be building tomorrow. Hubby, being the amazing man he is, is taking a day off to help me work on these so I can get them finished.
